Designed by former University of Michigan golf coach William Newcomb, Spruce Run at Grand Traverse Resort grew from a nine-hole layout into an 18-hole course and was renamed in 1992 for the spruce and fir trees lining its fairways. A par-70 with views over Traverse Bay, it is more forgiving than The Bear yet retains the challenge that made it a longtime host of the Michigan Open.
